I just joined up so I can vote for Howard Dean on the 8th for DNC Chairman. Here's what I had to do locally. You have to pay your dues by December 31st if you want a vote. I'm sure there's a way to find out what's going on in you area...
-Christian

Dear Friends of Party Reform:

We need your help to follow Governor Dean's prescription for political change.

DFA-Marin is sponsoring a group of candidates to run as delegates to the CA State Convention from the 6th Assembly District. We need you to join the Assembly District Committee by paying $48 in dues (two year membership) by December 31st (see below for details) and then we need you to show up at Pickleweed Community Center on January 8th, between 10am and 12pm to vote for the DFA candidates.

As most of you know, it is because of his ability to energize the grassroots and his advocacy of party reform, that Pat and I support Howard Dean a! s the next Chair of the DNC. We also fully support his contention that we must begin changing the party on a local and state level if we hope to achieve real reform on the national front. There are six men and six women delegates to be elected from the 6th AD. This is our chance to take action that will actually make a difference in the State Democratic Party. Many other active Marin Democrats are planning to run as well, so it is absolutely imperative that you join the Assembly District Committee and then come and vote for the DFA candidates on January 8th.

This past election has taught us all quite a bit, some of it good and some of it not so good. The good thing we learned is that when we come together and put our hearts, our energy and our commitment behind something we believe in, we have an incredible amount of power. The not so good thing we learned is that unless there is complete reform within the Democratic Party, all our grassroots efforts on its behalf will always come up short.

We realize that this is one more appeal for you to spend money at a very inconvenient time of the year. However, when you consider that the money spent buys us the chance to be active players and put DFA's ideas for change and growth into practice, it's not very expensive at all. Invest in the future of the Democratic Party. Please say you'll help by joining and voting.

Warmest regards,
Carole Mills and Pat Kunstenaar
co-chairs Democracy For America-Marin

Time: 10AM-Noon, January 8, 2005
Place: Pickleweed Community Center, 50 Canal Street, San Rafael
Purpose: Biennial re-organization meeting
Agenda: Certify Members /Bylaws change /Election of Officers
Election of Delegates to Democratic State Convention--six men and six women

Dues of $48 are payable by December 31st. Send them to Robert Larsen, Treasurer, 132 Ralston, Mill Valley, CA 94941. These are for two years since the term is for two years.
Members must be current on their dues in order to vote and/or become officers and delegates

Those who attend Harvard Business School and the like are schooled in the arts of deception. The Wall Street Journal did a wonderful article regarding just such lessons in an MBA program. The eleventh commandment: "thou shall not get caught" is the only one such as the Bushes and the Cheneys assiduously adhere and even with that, they get caught. Question is: Will they caught in time?
Cheney is about to be caught if the Supreme Court tells him to release the notes of his meetings with energy czars and how what went on in those meetings effected decisions made by this administration regarding energy regulations and such. The Enron crowd is at the top of the list of attendees. We know what happened there. The Court plans to hand down its decision in July. Mr. Scalia and Cheney went on a duck shoot together a few months back and while this case was either headed to the Court or already there. Scalia says he can't be bought. Even if the fully-paid-for trip were not an outright bribe, people tend to favor those they know and like; guys you shoot ducks and drink beer with. Whatever went on, it doesn't look! And Halliburton's sweet deals is another thorn in the side. They are one of the few companies that do what they do, question is: how did they get and then further develop the exclusive? Cheney has been wending his way in and out of the public/private sector for a long time. He's a brilliant man. He is as brilliant as Bush is stupid. That thought should keep everyone awake at night.
Something needs to awaken the hard core Republicans out of their deep sleep. The writings are on the wall, the information is out there. Denial! They are all in denial.

When we support Kerry, we should do so through Dean's site. In the very near future, I think, Dean is going to start asking for contributions for the Kerry campaign. If Dean's organization of support brings in truckloads of money for Kerry, then guess what: Dean gains a great deal (more) of credibility within the Democratic party.

Dean, as we know, is out of the race. And he can afford to say things that Kerry wouldn't. I think Dean needs to go after Karl Rove, and resume his practice of questioning policies of the administration in ways other people won't. And if he continues to be provocative, you'd better believe his words will generate headlines.

WASHINGTON — Howard Dean once dismissed John Kerry as "a Washington insider who shifts back and forth with every poll." But the pair met Wednesday to discuss how Dean could help Kerry win the White House this fall.

"The future of our country depends" on ousting President Bush, Dean said in a statement after what he called a "very good meeting" with Kerry.

On March 18, Dean plans to announce a grass-roots organization based on the 700,000 supporters he amassed via the Internet during his presidential campaign. The former Vermont governor is expected to use his network to raise money for Kerry and other Democratic candidates.

Most of the other major presidential candidates endorsed Kerry shortly after dropping out. Dean is expected at some point to make his support official, possibly later this month. The Democrats are scheduled to hold a "Unity Dinner" on March 25 with former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter and candidates who ran for the nomination this year.

You folks are the best! I hope you will all keep active both in our new enterprise as we develop it, and also in the short term. We can still send delegates to the convention, and we should. If you are in a state with district, and state conventions, please make sure everyone goes, so that we send all the delegates we are entitled to. If you are in a state that has not yet voted, be sure to vote. We'll have a great time at the convention.

Thank you all for how hard you have worked, and how much money you raised. And thanks for getting involved. It feels a hell of a lot better to try and lose than not to try at all. In any case I have to say that I don't really feel like we have lost. We only lose if we quit. There is an normous amount of power in numbers, and we can still change this country (and that is exactly what we're going to do!).
The Assassination of Howard Dean

By Naeem Mohaiemen, AlterNet
February 18, 2004

Two months ago, Howard Dean was the man to beat for the Democratic nomination. Then his campaign fell over a cliff, limping in as a distant second, third and even fourth, in the primaries. On Wednesday Dean officially ended his bid for the White House, telling supporters, "I am no longer actively purusing the presidency."

What happened? How could Dean's insurgent candidacy, which had energized and excited voters in every state, come to such a screeching halt?

The pundits claim Dean's "rage" undid him, that voters took a "second look," etc. etc. Nonsense really. The answer is much simpler. Howard Dean was assassinated in broad daylight. Unlike Kennedy's "grassy knoll," Dean's killers are not hiding – it was the Democratic Party itself, and more specifically the DLC, that successfully went after, and sabotaged his candidacy.

Remember the 1980s, when the Democratic Party found itself facing unassailable Ronald Reagan, "It's morning in America" slogans and an era of go-go optimism? In three successive elections, the Democrats were felled by the memory of Jimmy Carter. Dems were seen as soft on the Soviets, mullahs, crime and welfare mothers. Although Carter's gentle ways secured the historic Camp David Egypt-Israel accord, most Americans remembered the Iranian hostages, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the infamous "malaise" speech.

In 1988, Dukakis went down to Bush I because Republicans successfully painted him with the "L" word – "too liberal". Faced with a 12-year losing streak, a new generation of party activists took control of the party. Led by Bill Clinton and others, they formed the DLC – a powerful group with the explicit intention of moving the Democrats away from the left to the centre, from where they would beat the Republicans. Bill Clinton was the DLC's first candidate, and his eight-year run solidified its hold on the party. Clinton's Commerce Secretary Ron Brown was another DLC heavyweight, and until he was killed in a plane crash, instrumental in moving the party away from "liberal" positions.

Nothing succeeds like success. Buoyed by Clinton's popularity, a balanced budget and an era of prosperity, the DLC became the standard-bearer for the Democrats' political identity. That is until 2000, when the DLC's next king-apparent, Al Gore, took a stumble in the Florida panhandle and was then hog-tied by the Supreme Court. When the dust had settled and King George was safely inside the palace, a recount revealed that Gore had actually won, but the damage was done. The DLC's critics now came out of hiding – attacking the party for being too centrist, too cautious and too much like "Republican-lite." If you try to ape the right-wing of the nation, voters may decide to go for the "real thing"!

Howard Dean emerged within this specific context. From day one, he positioned himself as a reformer of the Democratic party – the man who would bring the party back to its liberal roots. Dean hit headlines by being the anti-war candidate. But even within that position, most of his criticism was of his Democratic cohorts, for cravenly accepting the Iraq war. Dean took pleasure in flaying candidates like Kerry for voting in support of the war resolution. The party took notice when Dean got up on stage and announced, "I'm Howard Dean, and I represent the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party!"

Another part of the Dean story, and threat to the party establishment, was his style and appeal. Howard Dean has often been labeled the "prophet of rage." It's certainly true that he was an angry man – angry at Bush, the war, the budget deficit, the mushrooming unemployment cloud, at all things that had gone badly wrong in three short years. This anger hit a chord with the popular imagination – dissatisfaction with Bush was high and Dean was the perfect protest candidate.

Another core part of Dean's appeal was his overwhelming support among young people. In 2000, one of the lowest voter turnouts was among young people. If you were under 24, you tuned out and stayed home in November. By contrast, the bulk of Howard Dean's support was among the youth of America. Energized by a strategy focused on Internet campaigning, "Generation Dean" or "Dean 2.0" spread across college campuses and gave a youthful aura to the man from Vermont.

Of course, the DLC did not take kindly to this direct challenge. The crucial dynamic in America today is that big companies, political parties and media are powerful businesses – and they will do anything to crush new threats. The DLC reacted with fury to the Dean candidacy, going all out to torpedo his momentum. Although Democratic nominees soon piled on the "bash-Dean" bandwagon, earlier attacks were carried out by DLC operatives. There was even the smell of scandal when two top Democratic candidates were found sharing information about Dean in an attempt to slow him down.

This is where Dean lost a crucial ally – the mainstream media also joined in on the anti-Dean feeding frenzy. In his early days, he had flayed big media for caving in to George Bush on Iraq, and media giants never forgave him for this. In the same week, Time and Newsweek ran "Who is the Real Howard Dean?" stories. One cover showed a face covered in dark shadows, another showed an incomplete jigsaw puzzle! Semioticians take note – bad guys in westerns always have their faces obscured in shadows!

In the end, Dean threatened a troika of powerful institutions. He was a threat to the political parties (because he attacked Democrats' centrist drift), to media (because he criticized their cowardly reporting) and to big business (because he would roll back chummy tax-benefits for corporations). All three institutions responded with venom and destroyed Dean's candidacy. In 1968, a sniper's bullet ended Robert Kennedy's anti-establishment candidacy. In 2004, the methods used were more subtle, but just as effective.

America is riven by a strange schizophrenia. It is an entrepreneurial nation that prizes individuality and celebrates non-conformists. Especially in the area of business, mavericks like Ted Turner and George Soros have been able to define their own space. But in the area of politics, the establishment guards the doors zealously – outsiders have no chance. In 1976 an unknown peanut farmer from Georgia came out of nowhere to capture the White House. Jimmy Carter was the anti-Nixon, his mantra was, "Trust me, I will never lie to you!" But insurgency candidates like Carter don't appear too often. People like Bernie Sanders have to run on Socialist tickets. Other voters are deserting the Democrats for the Green Party and Working Families Party, scoring small, incremental victories in local council elections across the nation.

Coming back to the 2004 elections, barring any surprises, John Kerry will get the nomination. If GIs keep dying in Iraq, if job losses continue, if popular anger over right-wing policies grow, Kerry has a shot. I'm part of the ABBA (Anyone But Bush Again) brigade. If Bush goes down to Kerry, I'll be the first to celebrate. But the Democratic Party is still waiting for a candidate who will help rediscover its soul.
On March 20 there are going to be protests against the continued occupation of Iraq. These will take place all over the world with the hope of exceeding the turnout of 2/15/2003.

March 20 is the one-year anniversary of the attack by the United States and the UK. These have led to a minimum of 10,000 Iraqi deaths and over 500 Americans. This has also alienated much of the world to an extent rarely acheived since the emergence of anything resembling a world community. These are just some of the problems with the invasion for example the fiscal irresponsibility of it would be even more prevalent in the protest if it weren't for the body count.

There will be large regional demonstrations throughout the United States. If you are interested in helping organize and would like contact information for your closest organizing group drop me a message and if I don't know it I'll find it.
Dean Bid Shows Signs of Ending

"He has been going through the motions this week, but Howard Dean's presidential campaign increasingly looks like it won't go on beyond Tuesday.

(snip)

His calendar for next week is not booked beyond Wednesday, when he plans to return home to Burlington, Vt.

His staff, some of whom are already planning to leave his headquarters for good on Wednesday, has not sought a new contract with the main air charter company that has been flying him around the country, aides say."

Ok, so I was listening to Sound Money on NPR today and they were doing a huge long peace on NASCAR. Mainly they were talking about the crazy brand loyalty NASCAR fans have for the sponsors. And as it was going along I kept thinking, how great would it have been if Dean had his own racecar. It's too bad nobody thought of that. What a great idea that would have been. I wonder if it's too late to get one?

And then they started talking about the Howard Dean Car, number 84. Now, up until this point in my life I could care less about the whole NASCAR scene, but when they started talking about Howard Dean's car I literally yelled "WooHoooo"!

Talk about a guy who has his finger on the pulse. Man, if Dean gets the nomination, Bush doesn't stand a chance!

"Assuming the current campaign trajectory continues, Kerry should have a Brahmin death grip on the Democratic nomination long before the Ides of March is upon us. At which point, he’s going to hear an iPod’s worth of siren songs all warning him that he needs to rein in his newly fiery populist rhetoric for fear of scaring off Wall Street or soccer moms or NASCAR dads or those elusive DLC Dems."

"But the real kiss of death would be to heed this call of the mild."

"Instead of dusting off the Democratic Party’s tried-and-untrue swing-voter strategy — remember 2002? — Kerry needs to become the pied piper of the discontented, the disillusioned, the disenfranchised and the millions who have stopped believing that politics is the way to make a difference in the world."

"Dean’s message of empowerment brought these disconnected denizens out of the shadows, and his Internet-based campaign connected them to each other — filling them with promise and hope. A promise that is now in danger of turning into disheartenment and disengagement."

The following statement associated with your e-mail has me stumped, "All the exit polls were showing it too close to call." I am looking for New Hampshire Primary exit poll results that reflect such a situation, but can't find anything I can hang my hat on.

There were some exit polls conducted for the National Election Pool, a media consortium of (CBS/NBC/ABC/CNN/FOX/AP) by Mitofsky International and Edison Media Research. On January 28, 2004, the New York Times reported that it relied on interviews with 1848 voters in 90 randomly selected precincts across New Hampshire. However, the January 28 report omitted the very totals that this message asserts exist. The survey I
have seen only explained in percentage terms why people might have voted for the various candidates. We are on the lookout for the data set with exit poll totals for each candidate that this message mentions, so, if anyone has it, please post the information and let us all know where to find it.

For now, that leaves us with the tracking polls to compare with the actual results. The University of New Hampshire Survey Center at http://www.unh.edu/survey-center/ published a tracking poll on the day before the Primary which showed 38% for Kerry, 26% for Dean, 14% for Edwards and 12% for Clark. As you know, this is fairly consistent with the actual results. Apparently, Gallup and Marist College had similar results in their tracking surveys.

We are confident that the official New Hampshire Presidential Primary results are accurate and reflect the will of the people. We have not reviewed and cannot confirm any other analyses done to date. However, we strongly encourage rigorous statistical analysis of results. Apart from the need to understand voting patterns, the election process deserves scrutiny and benefits from it.

When you examine statistical analyses of the New Hampshire Primary, please make sure these studies control for location and other key variables. The towns that use voting machines tend to be the large ones that are close to Boston and the Massachusetts media market. As one might expect, the hand counted towns tend to be smaller, farther away from Boston and nearer to Vermont. The Connecticut Valley (on the Vermont-New Hampshire border) media and Boston media would have covered
John Kerry and Howard Dean quite differently in recent years. Perhaps as a result, all three counties on the Vermont border and south of the White Mountains actually voted for Dean over Kerry in the Presidential Primary, even though Kerry won the state by a fairly large margin.

Any voting machine software is potentially subject to tampering. We believe our machines are less subject to tampering partly because those involved in the process know they would have the greatest chance of getting caught in our state. Due to our laws and traditions, New Hampshire has more recounts than any other state. Our Secretary of State, William Gardner, has recounted over 300 races, including some statewide races, in his term of office. In 2000, our office recounted 32
races involving 137 candidates. In 2002, we recounted 13 races
involving 83 candidates. It is not unusual to recount one quarter of the ballots in the state in one election year. We have recounted entire Presidential Primary races in the past.

In our state, people have become accustomed to recounts, and all
participants - voters and winning and losing candidates - walk away more confident as a result. Our law requiring a voter verified paper trail enables this process to occur.

To further reduce the likelihood of tampering, the law requires that, prior to each election, all towns conduct voting machine testing. The Secretary of State prints and marks a specified number of test ballots that have been filled out in a realistic manner using a wide variety of combinations. The test numbers generated by the towns are reported to the Secretary of State and checked for accuracy.

Anthony Stevens
Assistant Secretary of State
New Hampshire"
I think this Sunday's Seattle Times's headline summed up what is going on with voters. It said something to the effect, "Voting for ideas is fine, but we want someone to defeat Bush." The media spent countless hours trashing Howard Dean = not based on policy or record - based on personality - supposed anger and other non-issues, like Dr. Judith Dean.

The corporate media in this country is very messed up. It's sad that so many people are easily manipulated by shallow sound bytes over actual substance. I think no matter what the outcome of the 2004 presidential campaign, activist need to find effect ways to counter the corporate propaganda machine. It may be our only hope for any real change.

I'm actually pretty stoked on the outcome of Tuesday's vote. Sure Dean didn't get a lot, and Kerry was in front, but the field was split up. Delegates went all over the place. As long as the delegates don't end up all in one camp, we have tons of time left to win this thing. Nobody's even close to having the required delegates yet. That's why I'm looking forward to helping Dean here in California.

But Kerry? Man, the more I see of this guy the less I like him! I was out today on the Berkeley campus promoting an improv show I'm in on Valentine’s Day, handing out flyers and putting up posters. And what did I come across? A whole crap load of Kerry posters trying to get people to go to a meeting tonight from 7 - 9. The same date and time as the monthly Dean Meetup! That fuck! He really has no shame!

Anyway, I had a bunch of flyers to put up myself, so I think I accidentally covered up a few of his. Oops! Sorry about that Kerry, but you don't see anybody else trying to steel Dean Meetup night for himself. Go find your own damn night! And FYI: Dean is going to win California...
